The Weekly Pull List – August 9th, 2017

This feels right… tell me, what are you reading this week?

What’s on YOUR Pull List?

  • Grass Kings #6
  • Mister Miracle #1
  • Skin and Earth #2

Alright, so after the fifth issue of Grass Kings, I’m left wondering if Matt Kindt somehow got it in his head that his current original series at BOOM! isn’t supposed to last beyond a half dozen issues.  I don’t want to say too much about why this might be the case…but let’s just say that things are a far cry from being any semblance of a utopia.

What is there to say about Mister Miracle that most don’t already know?  It’s a Jack Kirby creation, it’s Tom King and Mitch Gerads working together again, it’s that maxiseries format we’ve seen become prevalent in recent years.  Sure, it might not have the “where the eff did this come from” factor that King’s The Omega Men had recently…but I think most of us are expecting great things.

Finally, we’ve got the second issue of LIGHT’S tie-in comic to her album of the same name, Skin & Earth.  And I haven’t read the first issue yet.  LOOK, I’M CATCHING UP AS FAST AS I CAN, OKAY?

  • All-New Wolverine #23
  • Jean Grey #5
  • Kill Or Be Killed #11
  • Mister Miracle #1
  • Redlands #1
  • Rose #5
  • The Wicked + The Divine #30

This is a fun week. Two new #1s on books I really have high hopes for.

Mister Miracle is someone I know absolutely nothing about, but it’s Tom King and Mitch Gerads. On a miniseries. I can’t turn this down.

Redlands is my pick of the week on the show, so check out tomorrow’s episode for my true thoughts. All I can say here is: Jordie Bellaire on writing has my interest very much piqued–I pretty much trust her to do awesome work.

Rose should be interesting this month. The story is slow burning and in a very good way. The art continues to be top notch (Ig Guara) and by #4, Meredith Finch has really come to own her writing. She’s far from a bad writer, but I think it took a few issues to find her voice in this one. I’m really liking it.

Jean Grey continues to be a very fun X-Book. She’s all over the globe talking to all sorts of Marvel characters in a way that doesn’t feel forced. Donny Cates is nailing the writing on this series.

  • Kill or Be Killed #11
  • Mister Miracle #1
  • Redlands #1

This is an unusually small pull list for me this week, but it does include one book I am unbelievably excited for: Mister Miracle. Obviously, Tom King tackling one of my favorite characters is enough for me to pull this title, but I also think this book has the potential to be a critical hit much like King’s previous “domestic superhero drama” The Vision. Add Sheriff of Babylon artist Mitch Gerads to the mix, and this looks like a “can’t miss” comic.

On this week’s IRCB podcast, Mike basically sold me on the new Image title, Redlands. Colorist Jordie Bellaire is writing this horror comic while Vanesa R. Del Ray handles the art. It’s been a while since I’ve read a true horror comic, so this one has me intrigued.
